Corporate Social Responsibility

As a socially responsible organization, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) operates at the highest social, environmental and safety standards within the country’s oil and gas industry.

Our CSR strategy is hinged on supporting education, improving public health, and developing local economies in all our areas of operation.

NNPC Annual National Quiz Competition

A major component of NNPC’s CSR activities in the education sector is the NNPC Annual National Quiz Competition. The study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics is a fulcrum of the Corporation’s efforts to participate in the nation-building process due to the key roles these fields of learning play in the growth and stability of the Nigerian economy.

Accordingly, the Corporation introduced an annual quiz competition which commenced in 2000 with participants drawn exclusively from the Niger Delta. However, in recognition of the strategic importance of this competition to the actualization of NNPC’s CSR objectives and its role in supporting the local content development goals of the Federal Government, especially as it relates to the oil and gas industry, the competition was transformed into a nationwide exercise in 2001.

So far, the competition has lived up to expectation with respect to its mandate, having been impacting positively on the intellectual attainment of young Nigerians nationwide, preparing them for taking over the mantle of leadership of this great country.

Today, it is heartwarming to note that many awardees of the competition have gone on to achieve outstanding academic excellence in tertiary institutions, locally and internationally.

A good example of this, is the remarkable achievement of a past winner of the competition who emerged 2nd in a contest involving participants from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Member Countries and Austria, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of OPEC.

Ever since it commenced, the competition has been characterized by very keen and healthy contest from the participating states as the various contestants slug it out in English and the core science subjects of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, all borne out of their sincere desire and commitment to do well.

In line with the vision of the new NNPC under the able leadership of the Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Kacalla Baru, a number of innovations to enhance the integrity and status of the annual quiz contest, starting with this year’s edition, have been approved and introduced.

These innovations include, the Corporation’s partnership with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Junior Engineering and Technical Society (JETS), as well as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) to raise the quality and standard of the competition.

Furthermore, beginning from this year (2017), the Corporation will be providing a one-off educational grant of N100,000 each for all state winners of the competition while a scholarship award of N300,000 will be granted per session to the overall winner of the competition. The 2nd and 3rd place winners are also not exempt, as they too will receive a scholarship of N250,000 and N200,000 respectively, per session for the duration of their tertiary education. All scholarship awards, as well as the one-off educational grants, shall be redeemable upon presentation of evidence of admission into tertiary institutions.

It is, indeed, noteworthy that the NNPC quiz competition provides a level playing field for students irrespective of gender and social background across our dear nation to demonstrate their educational prowess, bringing honour to themselves, their families and their respective schools.
