The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Engr. Andrew Yakubu, has been inducted as a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
At a well-attended investiture ceremony held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Lagos, Yaba, recently, the President of the Academy, Prof. Raifu Salawu, stated that Yakubu’s induction into the prestigious academy along with other eminent engineering professionals was in recognition of his track record of excellent professionalism and meritorious service in the oil and gas industry.
In a related development, the Nigerian Academy of Engineering honoured NNPC with its Gold Award in appreciation of the Corporation’s support over the years.
Speaking at the pre-investiture dinner/award ceremony, former President of the Academy, Prof. A. F. Ogunye, observed that NNPC has been one of the pillars of support for the Academy and its activities and that the Gold Award was a token of appreciation.
Engr. Yakubu who spoke on behalf of the other inductees expressed gratitude to the Academy for finding them worthy to be honoured with the Fellowship of the highest professional engineering body in the country.
He urged the Academy explore avenues for greater collaboration with all sector with a view to providing engineering and technical support necessary for economic development while assuring that the new inductees would offer their support for the promotion of the values and objectives of the Academy.
The investiture ceremony saw seven top old time engineering professionals honoured with the Life Achievement Award, while 14 persons were inducted as fellows.
Among those honoured with the Life Achievement Award were the pioneer Managing Director of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), Engr. (Chief) Joseph. J. Akpieyi; Former Minister of Communication, Engr. Olawale Ige; Engr. (Dr) Edet James Amana; Engr. Olusegun Adedeji; Engr. Lanre Fisher; Engr. (Dr) Joseph Ibukunle Folayan; Engr. Olufemi Lalude; Engr. Prof Raifu Salawu; and Engr. Joseph Shojobi.
Among the 14 engineering professionals inducted as fellows of the Academy were Group General Manager of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Engr. Afolabi Oladele; Prof. Musbau Salau; Prof. Christopher C. Okoro; Engr. Ibikunle Ogunbawo; Prof. Emem Ufot Nwa; and Engr. Abidoye Ayoola.
Others were Prof Stephen Layokun; Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel; Engr. (Dr) Adewunmi Desalu; Prof Eli Jidere Bala; Prof Suleyman Adeyemi; Prof. Usman Otaru Aliyu, and Engr. Otis O. T. Anyaeji.
Engr. Andrew Yakubu, apart from being the youngest of the inductees, is the first serving GMD of the Corporation to be inducted as fellow of the Academy.
