The Federal University of Technology Yola (FUTY), has conferred Honourary Doctorate Degree of Science (Honoris Causa) on the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo.

Two other eminent Nigerians were also honoured at the 13th, 14th and 15th convocation of the institution. They are: Governor Murtala H. Nyako, of Adamawa State and Raymond A. Dokpesi, GMD, DAAR Communications who bagged Doctor of Science and Doctor of Technology respectively.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Y. Ribadu said the honour was in recognition of Mr Barkindo's "selfless service and past outstanding contribution to the development of the nation and humanity."

According to the VC, the award coming from a federal institution is also in recognition of the GMD’s past contribution to the development of the institution and human capacity building –values which the university has been noted for.

Responding on behalf of the award recipients, the GMD dedicated the award to Nigerian oil workers. "We owe this achievement to all NNPC Staff, the JV partner companies as well as the entire good people of the Oil and Gas industry. The honour is yours," the GMD said.

He added: "We are truly grateful to the university for admitting us into the class of their distinguished alumni. We take this honour in the highest pride and we’ll continue to conduct ourselves in the best ways so as to boost the image of the institution."

He further pledged that the NNPC will always help the university in its amiable effort to improve the nation’s educational standards. This is because "investment in the educational sector is an investment for the future of our dear country," the GMD said.

He called on all the three tiers of government as well as the corporate sector to continue to contribute to support educational endeavours at all levels throughout the country.

The GMD later called on well-meaning Nigerians to support the federal government’s reform agenda in the oil, gas and power sectors."“The reforms are unprecedented and I assure you that they are meant to boost our economy."

Industry experts, friends, relatives and professional associates of the GMD all thronged the ancient city of Yola to witness the occasion which was preceded by the award of 31 Ph.Ds, 676 Masters Degrees and PGDs as well as 6, 792 First Degrees and Diplomas.

There was also a heavy presence of federal government representatives, state governors, the Senate, the academia, the media, the traditional rulers, the oil and gas as well as the local and international business communities.

Most stakeholders at the event described the GMD’s honour as well-deserved especially when one views the contribution of Mr. Barkindo in strengthening the position of NNPC and Nigeria among the comity of oil and gas producing countries of the world.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Shehu Ladan, GED C & I said;" Looking at the GMD’s credentials, he has been involved internationally in many efforts towards developing the nation’s oil and gas industry. So, there couldn’t be a better yardstick in bestowing on the award on him."

Also speaking, Engr. Mojeed O. Agoro, Managing Director, Kaduna Refining and Petrochemicals Company (KRPC) said the award was a as result of GMD’s hard work in transforming the nation’s oil and gas industry.

According to Dr Levi Ajuonuma, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, the award was a demonstration of the qualitative leadership style being displayed by the GMD at the NNPC and the nation’s oil and gas industry.

"It goes to show that the GMD is ready to take the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry to the next level. He is somebody who appreciates teamwork and recognizes merit and value addition. I am not surprised he’s dedicating the award to the staff and management of NNPC," the NNPC Spokesperson noted.
